TN/VA Scholars is designed to encourage students to complete high school courses that provide a fundamentally sound academic education. Such a curriculum emphasizes "on level" and above courses in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts (including foreign language), and computer literacy. Only with these courses can students compete in the high technology global economy of the 21st century. There are a number of local school systems currently involved in the TN/VA Scholars Program. Data has been collected from four original school systems - Hawkins County, Kingsport City, Scott County and Sullivan County.

The TN/VA Scholars program provides a vehicle for business, community, and education representatives to work together and have a quick and significant impact on education in our area. The program can create a partnership between business and education and serve as a springboard for a coalition to pursue improvements in other areas as well.

The State Scholars initiative is a business led rewards and incentives campaign that encouranges students to take a more rigorous and challenging course of study in high school. The State Scholars curriculum provides an education that better prepares students to enter a university, community college, technical or vocational school, the military, or the workforce. A partnership between school districts, local Chambers of Commerce and the business community; the Tennessee Scholars initiative is endorsed by the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Tennessee Business Roundtable, and many other education coalitions throughout the state.
